NYC: Skiing & Riding at The North Face

We gathered at The North Face’s brand new community-focused store in Soho for a night dedicated to all things skiing and riding. This month, the format was a little different: instead of having one speaker we had four different “Adventure Corners” so each attendee could find the people and information that suited their ski/ride needs. We all enjoyed Sierra Nevada brews, including their brand new “SKIESTA” which is part ski beer… and all fiesta (according to their website).

The North Face hosted an Adventure Corner dedicated to all things gear – with a focus on layering and staying warm through the winter. It didn’t hurt that their brand new Futurelight tech was available to demo.

OvR Founder Jamie Kiley shared his favorite spots in the Northeast and which mountains he recommended for various levels, interests and time of year. OvR runs bus trips from NYC almost every day throughout the winter and we’re teaming up to do a Mappy Hour x OvR trip (with Sierra Nevada brews!) on December 14th.

Aaron of WallyWellness led a corner all about getting started on the mountains from great deals for beginners to getting fit so it’s just a little bit easier.

Sarah of Mappy Hour and Matt of OvR led an Adventure Corner all about getting into the backcountry via ski touring and splitboarding. The main takeaway was: please take an Avalanche 1 class at the very minimum before you head out there. Once you’ve done that, check out this book, this trail system, and of course, the most epic option on the east.

Plus, Joseph accepted prizing on behalf of his 3 person crew of Explore More Challenge winners, who completed the 60 points in less than a month. Guess what? The challenge is still open through August 2020 so it’s not too late to get in!

Our next Mappy Hour will be December 8th at Threes Brewing with our partners NOLS. We’ll be learning about risk management and backcountry safety.
