We were in Kentucky last weekend climbing in the Red River Gorge and when the weather turned hot and humid, as it did almost every afternoon we were there, we couldn\u2019t help but think about the beaches back home.<\/p>\n
Our own haunt is out in the Rockaways<\/a> where we can surf<\/a> or spend a day on the boardwalk. We can\u2019t leave without grabbing a bite to eat at the grill at the\u00a0Playland Motel<\/a>\u00a0(especially after an early morning surf sesh) and there are plenty of places to grab a bite just a few feet from the breaking waves. If the thought of spending part of your weekend on the subway is unappealing, consider grabbing a spot on the NYC Beach Bus<\/a> because it\u2019s fun and quick (get to the beach in 30 minutes!) and probably departs a few blocks from your apartment.<\/p>\n At least a few times a year we\u2019ll head out to Fort Tilden<\/a> which tends to be a little less busy. We like to pack a picnic (the boardwalk amenities aren\u2019t as plenty out there) and explore the old military structures that remain on the beach.<\/p>\n If you want to get further out of town, Fire Island<\/a> is within a day trip\u2019s distance. Here you can take a break from playing in the waves and walk through the Sunken Forest<\/a>.<\/p>\n
