So whether it\u2019s someone who likes working out or wellness, let\u2019s try to incorporate that.\u201d<br><br><strong>Heather Hoffman:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019re trying to build inclusivity from scratch \u2013 teaching kids that getting dirty and playing in the mud isn\u2019t just for boys. [&#8230;] Everyone is treated the same. Get out there, jump in the mud, play around \u2013 the outdoors is for everyone. From ages 0-5-year-olds, we\u2019re trying to build that [way of thinking] for every generation.\u201d<br><br><strong>Pilar Amado: <\/strong>\u201cWhen women get together with women, you learn more. The reason we started Wednesday Crush Group, it is because we had a group of ladies who were going to the gym and men were telling us how to climb. But you know, we\u2019re different. [&#8230;] Climbing with women, for me, was more inspiring.\u201d<br><br><strong>Anna Pfaff: <\/strong>\u201cOne thing I see happen \u2013 I teach a lot of women\u2019s clinics for The North Face and other festivals I work for. And when they first came out, the whole idea of a women\u2019s only clinic I thought it\u2019d be gimmicky, but it was actually really cool [&#8230;] \u201cOne thing I see that we can do as a community is to support each other and encourage each other to try something \u2013 just be like, \u201cHey, that seems really cool you should try it.\u201d so you can help people get outside of their comfort zone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>______________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HP: <\/strong>\u201cHave you ever gone about identifying and\/or working with male advocates for gender diversity and the outdoors.\u201d<br><br><strong>PA: <\/strong>\u201cWe started having non-binary individuals coming to our meetups. We didn\u2019t know that until we were friends. They started to tell us that they\u2019ve avoided or haven\u2019t come to WCW in the past, because [they don\u2019t identify] with the name. So me and my other leader took it upon ourselves to change the name \u2013 it was kind of a lot of back and forth, educational information exchange, but I think we got it at the end. We\u2019re very happy about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>______________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HP: <\/strong>\u201cHow is your organization including not just women, but women of low-income backgrounds?\u201d<br><br><strong>GO: <\/strong>\u201cFriends of the Forest Preserves does a lot more than just organizing volunteers. Another part of our department is the [restoration] crews \u2013 there\u2019s a big push for us to help bring jobs to neighborhoods where there aren\u2019t that many jobs. We\u2019re applying for a lot of grants to bring jobs to those communities (south and west) and finding a way to give stipends to volunteers who are helping out to create a gateway for people to continue helping out.\u201d<br><br><strong>PA: <\/strong>\u201c[Through our group Sending in Color] We partner with the gyms to be able to offer a very discounted rate to all of our guests at the meetup. We also partner with the Boys and Girls club that we bring to the climbing gym on Fridays.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>______________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Audience Question: <\/strong>\u201cHow can men help women be more safe and empowered at the crag (or in the outdoors)?\u201d<br><br><strong>HP:<\/strong> \u201cThere are a lot of times, even as a woman, where I want to provide feedback to someone. But especially now that I\u2019ve experienced that [people giving feedback when I don\u2019t want it], I will also be like, \u201cHey are you open to suggestions &#8211; would you like some advice? Because if you don\u2019t that\u2019s totally cool!\u201d.\u201d<br><br><strong>AP:<\/strong> \u201cI think just offering encouragement rather than telling women what to do. [&#8230;] I think when men look at women climbing \u2013 just treat them as a partner. Sometimes men will climb with other men or I might climb with another man who has characteristics that are more feminine (emotional, have a different reaction, etc.) [&#8230;] just take away the gender and treat them like a human \u2013 you\u2019re going to keep your partner safe, you might say look at this beta or that beta \u2013 but you don\u2019t have to take care of us, we\u2019ve made it this far.
