Talk<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bikepacking vs Bike Touring &#8211; light vs heavy. <em>\u201cOften times these words are used interchangeably, I like to use the umbrella term \u2018adventure cycling.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Variety of bike does not matter as much<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Biking Clothes<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bring less and wash more: <em>\u201cPack fewer clothes and just make it a habit during the trip to wash your clothes and dry it on the back of the bike and just let the wind take care of it.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>Sweat wicking synthetics<\/li><li>Bike shorts are a good choice. <em>\u201cThey are much more comfortable (than regular shorts), especially if you\u2019re going on a longer haul trip.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>Clip-in pedals may be better than cage pedals. <em>\u201cYou really feel like you\u2019re one with the bike, you feel much more efficient, especially when you\u2019re going uphill and when your foot is on the up-pedal.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>Crocs are surprisingly effective. <em>\u201cThey\u2019re very functional, very comfortable, they\u2019re not only light, but they don\u2019t take up a lot of room.\u201d<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Food and Hydration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Chia seeds are a great option. <em>\u201cThey\u2019re very nutritional, they\u2019re high in fiber, they\u2019re easy to prepare.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>Wraps &gt; sliced bread, peanut butter<\/li><li>Tuna and beans are great for protein<\/li><li>You can bring produce! <em>\u201cYou just have to make sure that they\u2019re stored properly and not in an airtight container.<\/em>..<em>consider getting harder pieces of produce like carrots or cabbage that will hold better.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>Elekticity Stove, go minimalistic for cutlery and plates<\/li><li><em>\u201cThere\u2019s a brand called <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coleman.com\/all-camp-kitchen\/kitchen-essentials\/campers-utensil-set\/col_2000016425_pr\"><em>Coleman<\/em><\/a><em> that lets you strap the cutlery together so you don\u2019t lose them.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zyliss.com\/store\/products\/zyliss-easy-pull-food-processor-e910015u.htm\">Zyliss food processor<\/a> is an essential luxury item<\/li><li>Maximize water bottle capacity: <em>\u201cA lot of touring bikes have room for three water bottles on the frame, but I\u2019d encourage you to find all the areas that you can store water bottles (handlebars, seat, etc.)\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><em>\u201cSome people like to use <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camelbak.com\/\"><em>Camelbak<\/em><\/a><em>s, which is a backpack with water in it and a straw.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>Try the <a href=\"https:\/\/sawyer.com\/water-filtration\/\">Sawyer mini water filter<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Camping Gear<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>\u201cYou can start with anything you have and move up as you want to.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>2-person tent minimum (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alpsbrands.com\/alpsmountaineering\/products\/tents\/zephyr-2\">Alps Mountaineering Zephyr<\/a>)<\/li><li><em>\u201cMake sure to look for a tent that has a good design and more than two poles.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><em>\u201cYou just want that extra space for all your stuff, and just to stretch out.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>Air mattress vs foam mattress &#8211; portable but easily damaged vs sturdy but bulky<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/seatosummitusa.com\/\">Sea to Summit<\/a> is a good brand to find sleeping accessories (mattresses, bags, etc.)<\/li><li><em>\u201cDepends on how much money you\u2019re willing to sacrifice to make sure your load is light as possible.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>Headlamps &gt; flashlights because both hands are free (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bioliteenergy.com\/products\/headlamp-330\">Biolite 330<\/a>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Maps and Safety<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Get a pool noodle &#8211; acts as a nice shoulder signal for approaching cars<\/li><li><em>\u201cYou basically just strap it to your bike, you let the majority of it hang out the left side of it, and cars will see you from a mile away.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>Mirrors on the sunglasses become \u2018third eye\u2019<\/li><li><em>\u201cYou get really used to checking them now and then, and when there is a truck behind you, you can see it coming.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>The more reflective you are on the road, the better (check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventurecycling.org\/\">Adventure Cycling<\/a>)<\/li><li>Helmets are (obviously) super important!!!<\/li><li><em>\u201cI personally have had the helmet save my life twice.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li>Adventure Cycling also has extensive bike-friendly maps<\/li><li><em>\u201cThese maps will tell you where the bike shops are, where the campgrounds are, which churches you can sleep at, (&#8230;) and they take you on the more scenic roads.\u201d<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Putting it all together<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arkel-od.com\/\">Arkel<\/a>\u2019s bags are robust and sturdy (and big)<\/li><li><em>\u201cYou can literally throw anything in there and it won\u2019t break, because it\u2019s steel mounted.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ortlieb.com\/\">Ortlieb<\/a>\u2019s are waterproof<\/li><li>Use multipurpose items&nbsp;<\/li><li><em>\u201cA sports bra is a bathing suit, a pile of clothes can be a pillow, in Alaska our bear canister was a seat.\u201d<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q&amp;A<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Not much body gear (safety vest for reflectiveness, fanny packs)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schwalbe.com\/en\/start\">Schwalbe<\/a> Marathon Plus tires<\/li><li>one long sleeve, two short sleeves, layers (vest), leggings, two bike shorts, two pairs of shoes for a three-week trip<\/li><li>One towel is enough<\/li><li>Currently riding REI Novara (discontinued)<\/li><li>Biolite makes solar panels and battery
