With worldwide adventure comes great responsibility. In this Mappy Hour Chicago discussion, we'll cover the ins and outs of responsible travel, with a focus on sound decision-making and considerations for international trips as the world begins to reopen to tourism.

Derek Barthel, political activist and MA in Geography & Environmental Studies, will discuss:

• The history and politics of sustainable tourism, nature, and development
• The environmental and socioeconomic impacts of tourism
• Research-based advice on how to contribute to local communities and infrastructures
• How to minimize one's impact on precarious ecosystems
• Travel decision-making during a global pandemic

What's Mappy Hour, you ask? Mappy Hour got its start in NYC, but it's a nationwide movement to bring adventure-loving city-dwellers together and help one another get outside. Want to learn how to kayak? You're sure to meet someone who's out on the water every weekend. Planning your first backpacking trip? There's definitely someone drinking a beer next to you who's hiked the AT.
