Description

Come join MWABA (the Metro Washington Association of Blind Athletes), MHDC's very own Shira Gordon, and the League of American Bicyclists for a tandem captain training on Sunday, March 26th as part of the National Bike Summit!

At MWABA, blind and sighted adults and youth throughout the D.C. area enjoy sports and outdoor recreation together while promoting community and supporting each other’s health and fitness goals. For Mappy Hour's March theme of Accessibility, we couldn't think of a better fit!

We'll be meeting at the Eastern Market station for a fun afternoon followed by some bites/booze nearby.

At the tandem training, experienced stokers (blind or visually impaired cyclists who ride in back) and captains (sighted cyclists who ride in front) will give an overview of tandem cycling. Then we'll match interested new captains with tandems and stokers so you can practice doing short rides around the neighborhood. Feel free to come for part of the time if you can't stay for all of it! Bring a helmet if you have one. We'll have some available if you don't.

A few extra notes:

  • Attendees should wear clothing that they're comfortable biking.
  • Consider bringing your multi-tools/allen wrenches if you have them.
  • No need for SPDs/cleated cycling shoes.
  • There will be at least 5 tandems and a couple experienced captains and stokers to round out our group.

Please consider donating when registering! All donations will be passed on to MWABA and will help fund the great work they do!

MWABA organizes Thursday night tandem bike rides from Eastern Market and Bethesda during daylight savings and weekend rides year-round.
