Location

Lockhouse 22
Lockhouse 22 is just past mile marker 19 on the C&O Towpath.

You can bike in on your own, join Jun from Georgetown, or drive in and park across the canal just a few feet from the lockhouse itself.

Description

We did it! A full year of camping! To celebrate, we're sending off 2023 with a NYE campout in Lockhouse 22 on the C&O Towpath!

This is a rustic lockhouse, so there is no electricity, heating, or plumbing. There are port-a-potties on site next to the lockhouse, however. There is also no water pump at this site, so make sure to fill up at Swains Lock if you're biking in. Please also remember to bring a purification and filtration system for the water, as the water pumps on the Towpath are no longer treated.

There is a small parking lot just across the canal so this lockhouse is car-accessible. Furthermore, there are twin beds and trundles. Make sure to bring your own pillows and linens, though!

Sorry, but pets are not allowed in the lockhouses!

Tickets are $25.00 to cover the cost of reserving the lockhouse as well as for firewood.

Please be advised that we only have the lockhouse from 3pm and a key code is required to enter the lockhouse. If you end up getting to the lockhouse before then, you can text Jun for the code so that you can start getting settled in. Otherwise, feel free to hang out until I get there!

Jun will be leading a final ride out from High Road Cycling in Georgetown (3210 Grace St NW, Washington, DC 20007), with a rollout of around 2pm. I'll be there starting at around 1pm, however, to grab snacks and drinks before the ride.

We'll hop on to the C&O Towpath and take a leisurely 20-ish mile ride to the campground. Be prepared to be in the saddle for around 2.5 hours (including breaks).

All bikepackers are expected to ride with a helmet, bring along a flat kit, lights, and other essentials.

If you are interested but don't have bikepacking experience, reach out to Jun asap, and preferably at least a few days in advance, at juniperdarwinyoung@gmail.com directly and we'll get you set up.

We are required to vacate the lockhouse by 10am, but you can leave whenever you want!
