The theme of this Mappy Hour is, you guessed it, the Gowanus Canal!

You'll hear about:

• Historic, current, & future challenges affecting use of the waterway
• Can you actually paddle in the Gowanus? Is it safe?
• The story behind the Gowanus Dredgers boathouse and their public programs

So if you're missing your adventurous community, want to learn about paddling in Brooklyn or just want to meet cool new people, we hope you'll join us!

BONUS: The boathouse is hosting an amazing exhibition called Rising that you'll be able to view throughout the night.

Rising is an exhibition of new prints and drawings by visual artist Todd Drake, connecting through lines between climate change, loss and celebration.

Drake’s drawings, lino-prints, and silkscreens break open the dams of worry that freeze us around the subject of climate change. Old soul whales, surreal duck hunters, swimming deer, osprey, and wild boar are only part of his rollicking visual vocabulary that call attention to what we risk losing to rising tides. Drake’s concern for ecological collapse is met in this show with persistent hope and a call to meet these rising tides with action and understanding.
