DC June Mappy Hour by The North Face

June was one of our largest Mappy Hours yet, undoubtedly thanks to North Face athlete, climber, cinematographer, and explorer Renan Ozturk, our guest for the evening.

As we sipped beers from Port City, Renan talked with Bryan Shipley of the DC Adventure Film Festival about his inspiration, his background, and his photography. Renan talked about some of his well known adventures, like those documented in Meru and Down to Nothing, but also about some of his other endeavors–like his recent trip to Nepal to document the honey hunters. He told us how changes in technology have changed his work, and how he manages to find stunning shots while climbing incredibly challenging terrain.

After Renan took questions from the audience, we talked about local climbing opportunities, and broke into adventure corners to meet climbers with similar interests. Local climber Gene Park shared this great map of DC climbing opportunities, which allowed ice climbers, boulderers, or top ropers to find new crags to explore.
