Detroit Greenways Coalition Launches Mappy Hour DET

On April 25th- over 30 people showed up to Mappy Hour DET’s official launch party. Many people arrived on bikes and made their way inside The Collective at True North to enjoy a delicious cream ale by Eastern Market Brewing Company. Detroit Greenways, an organization centered around promoting and building a network of greenways/bike lanes, prepared a presentation about the history and future of biking in Detroit.

Biking started as early as 1868 in Detroit. This ignited the city’s development introducing paved roadways to support the people commuting on bikes. The first car did not show up in Detroit until 1896! Todd Scott, Executive Director of Detroit Greenways, showed us some really awesome bike maps dating as far back as 1895. Some of these maps outlined routes that connected Detroit to Chicago!

Todd shared with the group all of the amazing developments happening across the city to increase and support bike riding and commuting. It is really inspiring and exciting to see how much work is being done to improve bike paths all over the Detroit. The city has such wide roads and ample room for really great bike lanes and greenways.

As the sun started setting outside The Collective hut, the group spent the evening sharing adventure stories and drinking beer. As a bonus, those who biked to the event were shown some love with samples of Nakee Butter…way to support biking in the Motor City!

Can’t wait to see the group at next month’s event on May 30th. Huge thank you to everyone who came out to support Mappy Hour DETROIT!
