Find Don’s Book

Don Weise has been hiking, guiding and writing on the Harriman State Park area for decades. As our featured Mappy Hour speaker, he not only highlight his favorite Circuit Hikes in Harriman (the topic of his book) but also hikes accessible to New Yorkers without cars.

A few of Don’s favorite Harriman State Park hikes include:

  1. Bald & Dunderberg Mountains (see Bear Mountain Bridge + Great river views)
  2. Pyngyp Mountain – Rock Scrambles
  3. Pine Swap Mine – 2 miles
  4. Timp-Torne Trail – West Mountain Shelter (Hudson River View)

Don also recommends using Metro-North to access trails. Specifically you can use the Port Jervis Line to get to Tuxedo, Sloatsburg and Suffern. Or the Hudson Line to find hiking near Breakneck Ridge, Cold Spring, Garrison and Ossining. (If you’re looking for trail running advice, check out this video).
