Today’s big news: Mappy Hour is coming to Richmond this March. The first ever event will feature Patrick Griffin of RVA Paddlesports speaking on how to make your passion your career. Who’s behind Mappy Hour’s appearance in Richmond? We’re so glad you asked… presenting Mappy Hour Richmond’s Leader: Michael Jefferson!
Here’s Mike’s story:
Growing up African American outside of Washington DC, I was never exposed to the outdoors. The outdoors to me meant football, baseball, basketball and tag at the park. Shortly after joining the fire department, my shift partner invited me on my first backpacking trip. Three months later, I found myself in Aspen Colorado with crampons on my feet, and a pick ax in my hand. I was attempting to climb my first fourteener. Even though I did not reach to summit, I had found the outdoors.
Two and half years ago my fiancé Heather and I made the move south, from D.C. down to Richmond. Since the move, we have easily fell in love with the city and RVA vibe. We get the best of both worlds; amazing
city life and an abundance of outdoor connections. I can honestly say my love for the outdoors has grown and knowledge of craft beer is now top notch!
And Richmond too is ready to receive Mappy Hour. With mountains to the west, the ocean to our east and the James River cutting right through the heart of the city, there is no question Richmond is a Mecca for city dwelling outdoor enthusiasts. The key is bringing everyone together. Enter Mappy Hour. With the booming brewery scene, there is no shortage of good beer to drink while meeting new friends and bonding over days on the slopes, mornings on Manchester Wall, or an evening mountain bike ride on the Buttermilk Trail. RVA is a city with a small town vibe and a strong sense of pride. There is a different festival every week as we love one more excuse to celebrate living in this incredible city.
I am looking forward to being part of Mappy Hour to continue to grow the amazing outdoor community in RVA. I also hope to continue to bring diversity to the outdoor community through networking and outreach. The outdoors and its community has done a great deal for me and it’s my turn to pay it forward.
-Mike
