RVA: Making your Passion Your Career (Recap)

Suggestions anyone?

On Monday March 5th almost 40 people came out to support the launch of Mappy Hour’s first Southern Chapter! Our launch was all about turning your passion in to a career. Patrick Griffin, founder of RVA Paddlesports shared his story with us and how he was able to turn his love for whitewater into a full-time job!

Here are a few takeaways:

  1. Go for it- Someone close to Patrick suggested he start his own company and he went for it! If you’ve found something you are passion about and believe others will benefit from it, go for it. Sometimes the first step is the hardest; but be bold just go for it!
  2. Be all in- Let’s face it, we have been raised and taught to always have a back-up plan. Patrick attributes a lot of his success to the fact that he had no back up plan. While it may seem reckless to throw caution to the wind, turning your passion into your career is going to take total commitment. It’s time to let go of that back-up plan! Having no other options can be a great motivator.
  3. Sacrifice is necessary- No one said it will be easy. Just ask Patrick. Show up to his warehouse and he will show you the couch he spent many nights on. Getting to do what you love for a living is a privilege and you must to be willing to fight for what you love.
  4. Gain a new perspective- Never discredit the experiences in your life. They could be leading you to something great. You never know how that event could benefit you later in life.

I know may be easier said than done to “go for it” and completely commit yourself to making your passion your career. Patrick mentioned that “it seemed like things just fell into place.” I’d liked to think that when you fully commit yourself to doing something you are passionate about; the universe will give you a little help. Whether you believe in it or not, as the saying goes, “a little luck never hurt no body.”

Till next time

Cheers!

Shout out to chapter leader Tasmin Andres and our folks in Cleveland for the great idea. Where are you going/ where do you want to go in 2018?

We are excited to announce our next event. April 18 we will be hanging out at Triple Crossing Fulton. Beyond Boundaries is a local non-profit that specializes in taking individuals with disabilities on outdoor adventures. They will be sharing their story with us and letting us know how we can get involved in this amazing project. Look for more details in the coming weeks!
